Who doesn’t love bacon? The bacon from Bluebird Locker in Delmont SD is easy to love. This thick cut bacon has a simple flavor that is just perfect. One more great meat product from the South Dakota Locker.
I’ve already posted about their German Sausage and Liver Sausage. And, I love their bacon even more. When cooking the bacon it yields a nice amount of pork fat. Don’t throw that out – pork fat is a great cooking fat. The fat is heat stable and has great flavor – I like to use mine to make homemade french fries.
I found Bluebird Bacon at Coburns in Mitchell, I’ve heard County Fair sells it too. I’m sure many other retailers throughout the state carry it as well.
What is your favorite Bluebird product and where do you buy it?
Our family looks forward to the third Saturday in October all year. We love to go pheasant hunting in the Mitchell area. And, no matter how many birds we have at the end of the day – we always have a great time.
The Mitchell area tends to have loads of pheasants, a couple of hard winters and CRP land being planted to corn has reduced the numbers a bit. It is still a great hunting destination. We like to kick off the day shooting some clay pigeons, just to make sure we can still aim. Maybe a quick trip to Cabela’s if we need any last minute supplies.
If you plan to go pheasant hunting, I recommend the Mitchell area. However, the crew you go hunting with is more important than where. In my opinion, I enjoy spending time with my fellow hunters as much or more than the hunt itself.
First off, liver is an acquired taste. It has a distinct flavor that you can learn to love. Bluebird Locker’s Liver Sausage is a must for any fans of liver. It has great liver flavor. I like it with cooked cabbage and onions.
Ever since I read Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A Price, I’ve made an effort to eat some kind of organ meat once a week. The book illustrates quite clearly that cultures who eat organ meat are healthier and live longer. Organ meats are nutrient dense and prized by many cultures. If fact Dr Price encountered some native tribes that only ate the organ meat and left the muscle meat for the dogs.
Don’t fret if you are not ready for the liver sausage, Bluebird locker has great German Sausage and amazing bacon.
What is your favorite item from Delmont’s Bluebird locker?
Just East of Sturgis is the almost 7,000 acre Fort Meade Recreation Area. This is public land open for many uses.
The five mile-long gravel road is designated as a National Back country Byway. It stretches from exit 34 just off Interstate 90 to Highway 34 right by the VA Hospital.
Camping is available at the Alkali Creek Trailhead and at the Horse Camp. There is also a reservoir located in the North Unit of Fort Mead Recreation Area.
The variety of food you can find in South Dakota is pretty amazing. More and more farmers, ranchers and gardeners are selling their products locally.
The Bluebird Locker in Delmont SD is a great example. I remember when I first tried their bacon, simple flavor, thick slices and great taste. The German Sausage is high quality too. The first time I cooked it for my family we didn’t have to worry about leftovers.
Preparation is pretty simple. I just boil it in water until internal temperature is about 170. Then I throw it under the broiler – a few minutes on each side to give the skin a bit of crispness. And serve with some fried potatoes. Or, you can prepare it as you would brats.
Where can you purchase Delmont German Sausage?
I bought mine at Coburns in Mitchell. I’ve also heard that County Fair in Mitchell carries some of the Bluebird Locker products as well.
Where do buy your Bluebird Locker products?
If you love German food and find yourself in the Black Hills don’t miss lunch at the Alpine Inn in Hill City. The sauerkraut and German potato salad are just perfect.
I love the lunch menu at Hill City’s Alpine Inn. The German food is wonderful.
My favorite is the German Plate (as seen above). It is served with the German Potato Salad and red and green sauerkraut. I also like to start my meal off with a nice German beer too.
The Alpine Inn is easy to spot right on Main Street in between Granite Sports and the Dinosaur museum. And, try to save room for dessert – they have amazing desserts. My favorite desserts include: Grand Chocolate Tower, Crème Brule, Apple Cheese Strudel and Tiramisu.
If you find yourself out enjoying the Black Hills and hunger hits – where do you go?
Well if you are anywhere near Pactola Lake, head for the Sugar Shack. There you will find thick, juicy 1/2 pound burgers and great fries. Plus, when the weather is nice you can enjoy a cold beverage and your burger on the outdoor patio.
Pictured above is the Bubba Burger. That tasty burger is loaded with bacon, pepper jack cheese, grilled onions, jalapenos and BBQ sauce – finger licking good! The burgers come with chips, however I usually pay the extra dollar to have fries instead.
Other burgers to try: the Sugar Burger, Swiss Mushroom Sugar Burger and the Kraut Burger. You’ll find these burgers at the Sugar Shack about 20 miles south of Deadwood. Or about 4 miles north of the intersection of Highway 385 and Highway 44.
Guadalajara’s Restaurant is sure to satisfy. They have fantastic food and good sized portions. And, of course chips and salsa to get you started.
You can find them at 83 West Hwy 14 in Spearfish. This on the West side of Spearfish near exit 10. Visit them on facebook for more information and a map.
Huge main street concerts are planed for Friday and Saturday nights. Popular music from the Kid & Nic Show, DD and the Fayroh’s, the Potter Family, the Spinners and the Drifters. Check the 2011 Kool Deadwood Nites schedule for details.
This may the last big event of the summer, but Deadwood still has plenty to offer for the rest of 2011. Deadwood Jam is just a few weeks a way – September 16th and 17th. Oktoberfest is September 20th through October 1st and the SD festival of Books will be in town October 7th, 8th and 9th. Plus the 2012 Deadwood Events Calendar has been released if you are ready to plan for next year.
Listen up all you train enthusiasts, the South Dakota Railroad Museum is in Hill City.
You can find the museum just south of the 1880 train depot, they share the same parking lot. The place is loaded with railroad equipment and memorabilia. There is a really neat model railroad that is still under construction.
You can purchase some scale model railroad cars and back issues of railroad magazines can be had for a donation.
If you happen to be hungry while you are in Hill City, I always love to eat at the Alpine Inn. And, Prairie Berry and Stone Faces both have wine tasting rooms just outside of town.
