Just East of Sturgis is the almost 7,000 acre Fort Meade Recreation Area. This is public land open for many uses.
The five mile-long gravel road is designated as a National Back country Byway. It stretches from exit 34 just off Interstate 90 to Highway 34 right by the VA Hospital.
Traveling the scenic gravel road is not all there is to do in the recreation area. The 111-mile Centennial Trail begins at Bear Butte State Park, and travels through with access points at the Fort Meade Trailhead and Alkali Creek Trailhead.
Camping is available at the Alkali Creek Trailhead and at the Horse Camp. There is also a reservoir located in the North Unit of Fort Mead Recreation Area.
